Queen Camilla may not share the same style icon status as Kate, Princess of Wales, but the 76-year-old is still known for her own signature fashion sense.
The royal’s wardrobe is largely made up of a-line pleated skirts with knee-grazing hemlines, long-sleeved dresses, and a select colour palette. Camilla’s go-to colours include various shades of blue and on occasion, pastel hues such as white and cream.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Raymond Lam, a style expert from Vendula London claimed that the Queen’s consistent colourways are no accident.
He said: “On many occasions, Queen Camilla has stepped out wearing blue. She often opts for a royal blue shade, which is viewed as a traditional colour in the UK, as it is one of the main aspects of the Union Jack flag.
“Traditionally speaking, shades of blue are correlated to feelings of trust, authority and regalness, which are traits that the Royal Family are expected to convey.”
He continued: “Even the term ‘royal blue’ is derived from the Royal Family themselves, as it is said to have been created by a tailor in the 1800s during a competition to make a dress for Queen Charlotte.
“Blue is also seen as being a calming colour, helping royalty connect to the public through the feeling of safety and peacefulness that it brings.”
It’s not just Queen Camilla who often wears the symbolic hue either. Princess Kate, Prince William, and the three children are also known to don blue outfits for public engagements.
And according to Dr Becky Spelman, psychologist and founder at Private Therapy Clinic, it may be down to the ancient royal connotations of the colour.
She told Express.co.uk: “Blue has a historical connection to the British monarchy. The colour blue has long been associated with the House of Stuart, which was the ruling dynasty in Scotland and later united with the House of Hanover to form the British monarchy.”
The expert suggested that when wearing blue, Camilla, and other royals for that matter, may “pay homage” to this historical connection.
Of course, it also comes down to the Queen’s own unique fashion choices too. Becky explained that Camilla may simply enjoy wearing blue as she finds it “flattering for her complexion and personal style”.
This may also be why she opts for white and cream tones on “the rare occasions” when not wearing blue. Raymond said: “Wearing white is also a royal fashion tradition, with many of the larger royal occasions often having female working royals in attendance wearing the colour.
“It could potentially be used as a way to indicate their importance, but it could also be representing new beginnings, peace or purity, as well as being another one of the colours used in the Union Jack.
“With regards to religious services, tradition expects those participating in Holy Communion to wear white, but this is unlikely to be the reason why it is worn by the Royal Family.”
The style expert agreed that her go-to colour palette naturally enhances the colour of her eyes, adding that “any blue-eyed individual” would generally be flattered by neutral tones like white or cream.
