Queen Elizabeth is not expected to attend Easter mass on Sunday at Windsor Castle, according to several reports Thursday, after she pulled out of Thursday’s Maundy service, the first time she will miss it since 1970.

Key Facts

Buckingham Palace indicated the queen, who has had mobility problems, would not attend Sunday mass at St George’s Chapel and said “members of the royal family” would be in attendance.

Last week, the queen dropped out of the Maundy service, an annual pre-Easter tradition that takes place at Windsor Castle three days before the holiday, and Prince Charles and Camilla will take her place.

On Monday, the queen—who contracted Covid-19 in February—met with healthcare workers virtually and said the virus left “one very tired and exhausted.”

Key Background

Queen Elizabeth, who turns 96 next week, made her first public appearance in more than five months last week, during a ceremony to honor her late husband Prince Philip. In October she was briefly hospitalized and was recommended to rest for several weeks, promoting the cancellation of several events. The monarch recently achieved her platinum jubilee, her 70th year on the throne, which will be commemorated in June.
