Rachel Brosnahan is responding to speculation that she is on a short list of actresses in consideration for the role of Lois Lane for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. A recent article published by The Hollywood Reporter stated that Brosnahan had an impressive audition for the role before adding that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star, who is 32, “may be in the older range for what Gunn is ultimately hoping to achieve: a look at Metropolis heroics via 20-something characters.” During an appearance on The View, Brosnahan addressed the report:

“I mean, look, take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt, is my first piece of advice. But it would be extraordinary. I grew up watching Lois Lane, this incredibly talented journalist who is far from a damsel in distress. And I would jump at the chance if it arose.”

Other actresses mentioned for the role of the Daily Planet reporter include Sex Education‘s Emma Mackey, Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynacor, and Samara Weaving (Ready or Not). Whether Mackey, Dynevor, or Weaving have auditioned for the role is unknown.

Brosnahan has portrayed housewife turned raunchy stand-up comic Midge Maisel on Amazon’s Emmy-winning series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel since 2017. Her portrayal of the titular character has earned Brosnahan a Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards. The series, which also stars Alex Borstein, Michael Zegen, Marin Hinkle, Tony Shalhoub, Kevin Pollak, Caroline Aaron, and Luke Kirby, is in its fifth and final season. The last episode will air on May 26.

Up next, Brosnahan is set to star in another Amazon project, Lois & Varga. The limited series is based on a short story by Lisa Taddeo and “follows a newly-married couple that moves to a small and vaunted island after inheriting a heavenly parcel of oceanfront property. But once they arrive, they meet Varga, the island’s only stripper and yoga teacher, who begins to sinisterly unravel their lives.”

Superman Legacy
DC Comics

Brosnahan is not the only one to recently address the THR report. Gunn, who wrote the film and is set to direct, took to Twitter on Saturday, sharing: “For all of you asking, I would never comment on who is or isn’t AUDITIONING for a role. That’s the actor’s business only & isn’t something I’d make public unless they did it first after the fact….” He added: “For now, only one person has been CAST in Superman: Legacy, and it isn’t any of the regular players in the Superman world.”

Superman: Legacy will mark Gunn’s first project as CEO of DC Studios (a title he shares with Peter Safran). The film is scheduled for a summer 2025 release; according to its official logline, “it follows Superman as he reconciles his heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way in a world that views kindness as old-fashioned.” According to THR, David Corenswet (Pearl) is considered a front-runner to lead the film as Clark Kent, along with two other unnamed contenders.
