Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz has opened up about suffering a miscarriage in an emotional new interview as she discussed her new Prime Video series, Dead Ringers, in which she plays twin gynecologists.

The star weighed in on criticism of the portrayal of childbirth and loss in her new series, as it contains very graphic scenes of women going through miscarriages and footage of live births.

Speaking to hosts Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel the News Agents podcast, she said: “I think I probably was surprised because I was just telling this story about the female experience, and it didn’t seem to have been like heightened or overdramatised.

“Women have miscarriages, I’ve had a miscarriage, so you suddenly see blood coming out of your body and these are just all part of a female experience of being alive.

“So, we’re not used to it. I think we’re not used to seeing any of those things being represented cinematically or fictionally. So maybe this is breaking some new ground this show.”

The star, who is usually very private, didn’t divulge when she suffered the miscarriage.

The British Actress, 53, is a mother of two. She shares a son Henry, 16, with ex-partner, director Darren Aronofsky, 54, whom she was with from 2001-2010.

She also welcomed daughter Grace, now four, in 2018 with her husband, James Bond star Daniel Craig, 55.

During the chat, she also slammed America’s gun and abortion policies.

“In America they want to deregulate absolutely everything,” she said. “Except for women’s bodies.

“It seems to be the only place that the government are totally interfering. And guns…Guns and uteruses. It sounds like the name of a really bad rock band,” she joked.

However, she quickly turned serious again when discussing the contentious topic.

“Both ends of life have different rules, it is very strange…” she contemplated.

“Children…have to be born but there’s going to be no free health care for them.

“There’s no free schooling for children under the age of five.

“And now every day, there seems to be more and more of a chance that you might get shot by an assault rifle at school…

“You can take life at the end of life; the government can choose to say you deserve to die.

“But at the beginning of life a woman has no choice. How do you rationalise that?” she questioned.
