Rahul Gandhi did not say he spoke with Mahatma Gandhi; the video is clipped – FactCrescendo | The leading fact-checking website in India

Rahul Gandhi did not say that he spoke with Mahatma Gandhi. The viral video is clipped.

Social media users have often targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and shared clipped and edited videos related to the speeches he has given.

In the backdrop of this, a viral video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is widely circulating on social media with the claim that Gandhi claimed that he has spoken to Mahatma Gandhi.

Video shows Rahul Gandhi saying, “On this issue I had a discussion with Gandhi ji as well. In addition, my entire mind, my entire logic is saying that on this issue, Gandhi is wrong and I am right. However, I know that…from within I know that my mind is telling me he (Gandhi) is wrong and I am right. But I know that he is right and I am wrong,”

Users are laughing at Rahul Gandhi on this statement because Rahul Gandhi was born in 1970 and he claims to have a discussion with Mahatma Gandhi who passed away in 1948.

However, we found that the viral video has been clipped and is being shared without any context.

The caption states, “He himself spoke with Mahatma Gandhi!”

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search along with relevant keyword search. The results led us to the original version of Rahul Gandhi’s speech uploaded in the channel of Indian National Congress. The video was streamed live on 26 February 2022 with the caption “Shri Rahul Gandhi’s address at the Chintan Shivir in Dwarka, Gujarat.” The entire speech is 59 minutes 18 seconds long.

Upon listening to the entire speech, we found that the video has been clipped and shared without a proper context.

In the longer version of the video, Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying, “There was a major difference between Gandhiji and other leaders. My great grandfather (Jawaharlal Nehru) also used to work with Gandhiji. I read a letter of his, in which he wrote to someone speaking about Gandhiji. In the letter, Nehruji wrote, ‘I had a discussion with Mahatma Gandhi on this issue I had a discussion with Gandhi ji as well. In addition, my entire mind, my entire logic is saying that on this issue, Gandhi is wrong and I am right. However, I know that…from within I know that my mind is telling me he (Gandhi) is wrong and I am right. But I know that he is right and I am wrong.”

Thus, it is clear that Rahul Gandhi did not say that he spoke with Mahatma Gandhi but he was referring to the letter his great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru wrote to someone where he spoke about Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi was speaking about the contents of the letter in first person.

Below you can see the comparison between the viral video and the original video for additional context. The comparison makes it clear that the viral video is clipped and originally Rahul Gandhi was referring to the letter his great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru has wrote about Gandhi.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be shared out of context and has been clipped. Originally, Rahul Gandhi was referring to the letter his great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru has wrote about Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi did not say that he spoke with Mahatma Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi was speaking about the contents of the letter in first person.
