Now that a lane of Highway 17 has reopened, allowing chowder chefs and fans to make their way over the hill from the Bay Area, it’s official:
The 42nd annual Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Chowder Cook-Off is on for this weekend.
The popular two-day cook-off — the largest in the nation — raises funds for the city of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department. Last year the total was $80,000, according to the Boardwalk’s Kris Reyes.
Amateur chefs will compete Saturday for prizes and bragging rights in the categories of Boston style, Manhattan style, Most Tasted and People’s Choice. Professional chefs will square off on Sunday.
Tasting kits ($12 for six samples and a People’s Choice ballot) are available online now and will go on sale in person at 10 a.m. each day. The public tasting will begin at 1 p.m. Members of the public are advised to arrive very early. If you pre-purchase tasting kits, pick them up at the Boardwalk sales booths.
Winning teams will be announced at 4 p.m. each day.
Boardwalk admission is free.
