Ralf Rangnick points finger at Man Utd players for Aston Villa draw as ‘two points lost’

Ralf Rangnick was not pleased with how his Manchester United side conceded twice in the final 13 minutes to throw away a Premier League victory away at Aston Villa on Saturday night. The German said his side had positives to take away from the result, despite it feeling like “two points lost”, but pointed the finger at his players for losing their momentum late on at Villa Park.

Stand-in captain Bruno Fernandes had given United a two-goal lead with a brace in the Midlands as United looked for a morale-boosting three points in their fight to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

But former Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho came off the bench to provide an assist for Jacob Ramsey to make it 2-1 and then scored the equaliser himself on his debut for the Villans, having only signed on loan from Barcelona on Tuesday.

And Rangnick could not hide his frustrations at how his charges managed to turn three points into one by conceding twice in four minutes late on.

The interim United boss told Sky Sports post-match: “Extremely [frustrating]. It’s very difficult to find some positives after these 90, 95 minutes. We had spells where I felt it was our best game since I came here.

“On the ball in the first half in the first 30 minutes, we completely dominated the game and could have scored even two or three goals. But again we saw that we’ve taken some steps forward but still we’ve got quite a few things to improve and do better.

“The impetus especially in the last 15 minutes, after we were 2-0 up, we have to keep it going and defend as a team.

“The plan was to press them in the mid-zone area and we did that very well in the first 30 minutes and controlled the game also in possession of the ball.

“Those were the positives in most parts of the game. It’s difficult to defend them all of the time but when you’re 2-0 up, you have to defend it better than we did in the last 15 minutes.

“We still gave away too many balls at times and in the last 15 minutes we were not as compact as we were before and therefore conceded the two goals.

“In the first half-hour they didn’t have a shot on our goal. In the last 15 minutes before half time the pressure was higher, we were not as compact, we were not as courageous to attack forward and to step up.

“But again in parts of the second half it was better again and the way we prepared our second goal in the pressing situation was fantastic.

“After that [second goal] you just have to take those three points back home. As of now, it feels like a defeat to be honest.”

Rangnick added: “We have the next important game coming up on Wednesday [away at Brentford] and then on Saturday at home against West Ham. Right now the whole team is very disappointed about the result.

“Again what we played and what we showed today was a step forward for sure but in the end it’s also about getting the result.

“This draw doesn’t feel like one point, it feels like two points lost and given away.”

Goalscorer Fernandes meanwhile said: “I think the performance was better than the result for sure. We controlled the game more than before. But the main thing for us is winning points.

“For the overall game we deserve more. But the game is not about deserving, it’s about getting results. Unlucky for us. Still a lot to improve even if the performance was good.

“I’m not happy at all. Everyone is happy to score goals, I’m one of them too. I’m happy to score but I prefer to win the game.”

United have only lost one of the eight Premier League matches that Rangnick has overseen but have won just one of the past four and have served up several unconvincing performances.

The result leaves them five points off of fourth-placed West Ham, though they have played one match less than David Moyes’ men.

But Tottenham, sat one place above the Red Devils in sixth, have three games in hand on the Hammers and can move 10 clear of United by winning all three.

United have the chance to make ground on West Ham against Brentford on Wednesday night, when they hope top goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit to return after missing the trip to Villa Park.
