Thousands of people made their way to the capital city’s Itaewon district for Halloween. The stampede reportedly occurred in a narrow, sloping alley close to the Hamilton Hotel.

Eyewitnesses described being trapped in the alleyway. Many were scrambling to get out of the crowd as people began piling on top of each other. Most of the deceased are said to have been in their teens and 20s.

Ramaphosa has since wished all those injured speedy recoveries and said the people of South Africa join the people of South Korea in mourning the lives lost in the tragic incident.

South Korea President Yoon Suk-yeol has also declared a period for national mourning following the deaths.

Suk-yeol stated that the government would thoroughly investigate the cause of the incident. He added that they will make sure that fundamental improvements are done to ensure the same accident does not reoccur.

“My heart is heavy and it is difficult to contain my sorrow,” he said.
