UEFA have fined Rangers £16,000 after supporters lit flares ahead of their Europa League match in Lyon.
The travelling fans had lit the pyrotechnics in an apparent protest against the French authorities and their handling of the game.
The local government in Lyon had initially said that Rangers fans would not be permitted to attend the match because a ‘Festival of Lights’ meant that there was not sufficient resource to police an away support. They then relented at the last minute, permitting just over 2,000 Rangers fans to watch the match.
A number of supporters let off their flares ahead of kick-off while unfurling a banner that read “Rangers festival of lights”.
That brought a charge from UEFA for breaking rules on fireworks inside stadia and on Friday the European governing body announced that the club had been fined after a meeting of the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body.
A fine of €19,250 was imposed for breaking rule 16(2) which forbids “the lighting of fireworks”.
Lyon were fined €5,000 for an offensive banner that was displayed at the same game.
