Rangers v Napoli match rescheduled due to Queen’s death

UEFA have announced Rangers’ Champions League group match with SSC Napoli has been rescheduled due to “severe limitations on police resources” following the Queen’s death.

The sporting body announced on Sunday that the match, due to be held at Ibrox on Tuesday, would be moved back 24 hours to Wednesday at 8pm.

In a statement posted on the UEFA website, the organisation said: “This is due to the severe limitations on police resources and organisational issues related to the ongoing events surrounding the national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”

In addition, the UEFA Youth League game between both teams will also be postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday at 2pm.

Queen Elizabeth passed away on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire. Her eldest son, King Charles III, was formally named her successor in a ceremony on Saturday morning.

UEFA said away fans would not be permitted to attend the rescheduled games due to the strain on police resources and as a result, Rangers fans would not be permitted to attend the return leg in Naples “as a matter of sporting fairness”.

The sporting body urged fans not to travel and to “respect this extraordinary situation”.
