NEW DELHI: Ten years after making a century on firstclass debut against Tamil Nadu, having managed to play just 20 games, Vaibhav Rawal scored a defiant unbeaten 95 on the last day of the Ranji match against the same opponents to help Delhi avert another loss in the season.
At the end of the day, Tamil Nadu may have felt hard done by Delhi’s slow over-rate while chasing the 139-run target in the last hour. They finished with 54/3 in six overs.
However, it was always difficult to get all overs in with the light fading rapidly.
Delhi, having lagged all match, managed a jailbreak and managed a point while Tamil Nadu walked away with three points. It was always Tamil Nadu who were looking to make a match out of this here at the Ferozeshah Kotla when Delhi resumed their second innings at 28/1 on Friday, still trailing by 96 runs.
Washington Sundar assumed the role of the lead spinner with leftarm spinner Sai Kishore on a pitch that was starting to stay low but remained slow.
Rawal joined Delhi’s most prolific batter Dhruv Shorey at 96/3 after Sai Kishore had trapped Yash Dhull in front of the stumps for 37 off 33.
Shorey continued his good form with flawless batting as the duo put on 70 runs for the fourth wicket. The match seemed to be heading for a draw before Sandeep Warrier had Shorey edging to wicketkeeper N Jagadeesan for a fluent 70 off 115.
Rawal looked unflustered at the other end even as Washington kept chipping away at the wickets. When Washington polished off the tail to finish with figures of 4/43, Tamil Nadu wanted to have a shot at the target with an hour remaining but Delhi were in no hurry to finish their overs.
