Manchester United will reportedly tie Rasmus Hojlund down to a six-year contract at Old Trafford if they complete the signing of the 20-year-old this summer. The Red Devils are in talks with Atalanta over a move for the striker, with a deal now said to be close.
Hojlund impressed in Serie A last season, despite starting only 20 of Atalanta’s 38 matches. The youngster, who only moved to Italy last summer following a seven-month spell with Sturm Graz in Austria, bagged nine goals and four assists as his side finished fifth in the Italian top-flight.
Hojlund has become United’s No 1 forward target after their interest in Harry Kane waned. And, according to RTL‘s Mohamed Bouhafsi, it is the dream of Hojlund – who has reportedly signed a six-year deal – and his father for the Denmark international to join Erik ten Hag’s team. Hojlund has already agreed to move to the north west, and there could soon be a breakthrough in discussions between United and Atalanta as the two clubs continue talks.
Sky Sports have reported that United want to complete a deal for Hojlund well in advance of the new campaign, which gets underway in two weekends’ time. The 13-time Premier League champions have been reluctant to go beyond a £51million package due to Financial Fair Play restraints – but Atalanta value the player at over £60m.
Atalanta may have signalled their intentions to cash in on Hojlund on Saturday after leaving the player out of their starting team to face Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly. The young star travelled with his team-mates to Dorset for the encounter but didn’t make it off the bench as the Italian team ran out 3-1 winners.
Atalanta have also completed the signing of Almeria forward El Bilal Toure, who is seen by many as Hojlund’s replacement at the Gewiss Stadium.
United boss Ten Hag is desperate for a new frontman after seeing his side lose 2-0 to Real Madrid in a friendly in the USA on Thursday. And the Dutchman is also considering deals for Eintracht Frankfurt star Randal Kolo Muani, Ajax ace Mohammed Kudus and at least one other target after Paris Saint-Germain also made a bid for Hojlund.
Ten Hag was asked whether his side’s attacking display against Real emphasises why he was on the hunt for a new striker. And the 53-year-old responded: “Absolutely. There were two things – the pressing can be better from the start and scoring goals. I think we need more players who are capable to be in the one-on-ones and we had the situations of one-on-ones.”
