Ray Parlour wants Kieran Tierney to become Arsenal’s new skipper after Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang was stripped of the captaincy.

Earlier this week, the north London club announced that Gabon international Aubameyang will no longer be wearing the armband after his latest disciplinary breach.

The 32-year-old was omitted from Arsenal’s matchday squads for the wins over Southampton and West Ham, while Mikel Arteta has confirmed that he will be unavailable for selection against Leeds on Saturday.

Spanish boss Arteta will rely on his leadership group – including Alexandre Lacazette and Granit Xhaka – until choosing a permanent successor.

Gunners legend Parlour would like to see 24-year-old left-back Tierney take up the role.

‘When Tony Adams got the captaincy I think he was around 21. Certainly, you’re never too young.

‘Look at Declan Rice, he is the perfect example – he’s perfect for West Ham.

‘I think it’s down to the manager to look at training and see who has the influence.’

When asked who he would have as captain, Parlour told talkSPORT: Tierney – that’s what I’d like to see.

‘If [Aaron] Ramsdale was a centre-half, he’d be number one.’

Fellow Arsenal hero Ian Wright is in agreement with Parlour that former Celtic captain Tierney should take the reins due to his leadership qualities.

‘I’m probably going with Kieran Tierney, if I’m being totally honest,’ he told Ringer FC’s Wrighty’s House podcast.

‘I know that [Nuno] Tavares is now somebody you’re looking at and going: “Yeah, I like him as well”, so is Kieran an out-and-out number choice? I don’t know. Ben White? I don’t see Ben White speaking too much.

‘I’m looking at Kieran Tierney simply because he plays and leads by example and if he’s fit then he probably makes every single team that I pick for Arsenal simply because of the way he plays.

‘You’re hoping he can steer clear of injuries because if Tierney’s fit, as good as Tavares is – and he’s showing how good he is – but if we’re talking about a captain that we want to look at on the pitch who is not afraid to of telling others they’re not doing this and that, then probably Kieran Tierney should be the next captain.

‘Coming from Celtic and captaining Celtic, a massive club. He knows what it takes to be able to captain a club of stature.’
