After the latest U.S. Department of Homeland Security announcement, the REAL ID deadline for air travel is now postponed until May 7, 2025. That means you have a longer timeframe to use your current driver’s license to get through TSA security checkpoints for domestic flights. Here are some actions to consider to prepare for the eventual day when REAL ID is mandatory.
Get A REAL ID-Compliant Driver’s License
The DHS announcement states the primary reason for the two-year delay is that many states have a backlog in processing vital documents due to the pandemic shutdowns. The slow processing times are discouraging many individuals from getting a compliant ID.
You might be putting off switching to a compliant driver’s license as you will need to schedule an in-person appointment at your local DMV or driver’s license center. For many, a trip to the DMV is about as pleasant as visiting the dentist.
In addition to scheduling your appointment, you will need additional paperwork that isn’t necessary for a normal renewal. Be sure to bring the required documents to avoid a wasted trip.
Verify Your Passport Is Up To Date
Having a current travel passport is a valid substitute for a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license. Instead of only bringing your passport on international flights, you can start carrying it for domestic travel.
An adult U.S. passport can be valid for up to 10 years, so you have many opportunities to use it when you travel by plane. Renewing your passport is also relatively quick and easy. But, you should be proactive as certain destinations prohibit visitors with expiring passports from entry.
Apply For TSA PreCheck Or Global Entry
As most aspects of leisure travel are inching back to pre-pandemic levels or are exceeding the previous record highs, airport wait times can be lengthy again.
One way to skip the long lines is by getting TSA PreCheck or Global Entry for free through a travel rewards credit card. Depending on the card, you may also receive additional expedited travel perks such as priority boarding or airport lounge access, which can take the stress out of long travel days.
The initial application for these programs requires an in-person interview, but your trusted traveler credential lasts for up to five years before you need to re-apply. Unfortunately, this clearance isn’t a substitute for REAL ID. But it can be a significant timesaver at the airport.
Final Thoughts
Now that the REAL ID travel extension is through May 2025, you don’t have to rush to replace your driver’s license. Hopefully, you can use your time and these suggestions to get through airport security effortlessly.
