On Sunday morning, the Spanish giants confirmed that Karim Benzema would be leaving the Bernabeu this summer after receiving an eye-wateringly lucrative contract offer from Saudi Arabia.
The Frenchman had triggered a one-year extension earlier this year but Real said the 35-year-old had ‘earned the right to decide his future’ and have agreed to let him leave.
Los Blancos had not initially been planning on losing Benzema this summer but have now been sparked into action, with the club keen to bring in a new, elite frontman to lead the line.
They tried to sign Kylian Mbappe previously, though PSG have rebuffed all offers, while Erling Haaland is committed to Manchester City.
So, according to Spanish newspaper Marca, they will now put all their efforts into signing Kane with manager Carlo Ancelotti having identified the 29-year-old as the forward he wants.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy does not want to lose his top scorer and has already been steeling himself to resist any overtures from Manchester United.
The north Londoners were prepared to risk losing Kane for nothing next summer rather to sell to a domestic rival now, but that stance isn’t quite so strong when it comes to foreign interest.
The Daily Mail are reporting that Levy will ask for £100m should Real come calling but would be prepared to negotiate.
There is a feeling that a move to Madrid might suit all parties, with Kane getting the chance to add trophies to his CV, Tottenham cashing in without strengthening a rival and Real getting the striker they now so desperately require.
It remains to be seen if Kane will accept a proposal from Real, though, with the forward known to be desperate to break Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record.
The forward is currently 48 goals shy of claiming the record for himself – something he could realistically hope to achieve in the next two seasons – while he and his young family are happy and settled in England.
Real, meanwhile, do have the funds available to fork out £100m on Kane while they can also offer him a big pay increase, with the departures of Benzema, Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio freeing up a lot of space on their wage bill.
Although Tottenham chairman Levy is a tough negotiator, he has a good relationship with his Real counterparts – particularly after the deal that saw Gareth Bale move to the Bernabeu for a then record fee – and that could help talks progress quickly.
While Spurs endured a very disappointing campaign, Kane shone individually with 30 Premier League goals, becoming the first player to hit that benchmark in two 38-game seasons in the process, while he also usurped Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time top scorer.
