‘Recipe for disaster’: Storm Barra could blow motorhomes over as drivers warned of damage

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for most of the UK for snow, heavy rain and strong winds. After Storm Arwen battered the UK, leaving thousands without power for days, even weeks for some, Storm Barra is now expected to bring further weather chaos.

The Met Office warns drivers that a yellow weather warning could lead to some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport.

This also applies to high-sided vehicles as delays could occur on exposed routes and bridges likely being held up.

Serious damage was seen when Storm Arwen hit Scotland which blew a caravan down an residential neighbourhood.

In Cwmbran, south Wales, a man was shocked to find a caravan overturned in his garden, just inches away from shattering his living room window.

The gale force winds of Storm Arwen blew the leisure vehicle 15 doors away from his neighbour.

Mr Owens continued, saying: “Whilst driving, reduce your speed and shift into a lower gear.

“This will help you to better control your motorhome and grip the road. Refrain from overtaking in any instances.

“If you try to overtake and the wind blows towards the cab, then you will lose speed which could endanger both yourself and the vehicle you are overtaking.

“Finally, never take your hands off the wheel. You will need both hands to counter the pressure of the wind by gently turning the wheel as the wind comes and goes, and as it varies in its directional force.

“Oftentimes, you will be able to gauge how the wind is shifting by looking at road signs up ahead and at how the wind is rattling them.

“A poor speed adjustment to strong winds is a recipe for disaster and could overturn even the biggest motorhome.

“Be particularly vigilant when exiting tunnels, as you may suddenly find yourself exposed to a powerful current of wind.

“And of course, try to find somewhere safe to pull over as soon as you can.”
