Who says no one cares about women’s football?
It was a far from perfect performance from England in their Women’s Euro 2022 opener but the vibrant crowd certainly made it a truly memorable occasion.
Old Trafford, which played host to the Lionesses’ 1-0 win over Austria, was buzzing long before the two sides stepped out onto the pitch as this wonderful festival of football kicked off.
Despite all the chaos at Westminster, patriotism burned as brightly as ever inside Old Trafford in Manchester as God Save the Queen was belted out across stands.
After the anthems, we were treated to a special guest in the form of the little remote car, which stole our hearts at Euro 2020, delivered the match ball into the centre circle. The ball was deservedly cheered off by all the excited supporters.
Moments later the opening match of Euro 2022 was under way and despite England’s nervous start they were in front inside 20 minutes as Beth Mead’s poked effort went inches over the goal-line.
Old Trafford was in raptures, once the referee double checked with goal-line technology that the ball had actually crossed the line.
Ian Wright, an excellent champion of women’s football, certainly enjoyed Arsenal forward Mead’s opener.
The strike proved to be the winning goal in what was a relatively uneventful contest.
However, the crowd didn’t stop cheering all night, with talkSPORT’s Lianne Sanderson saying the match was ‘one of the loudest environment’s’ she’s ever been in.
It’s no wonder the former England forward felt that way as 68,871 were in attendance at Old Trafford for the match, which makes it a record crowd at any match in Women’s European Championship history.
There were a couple of nervous moments for Sarina Wiegman’s side towards the end of the match as they sealed their fairly unconvincing win.
England will know they’ll have to be better later in the tournament if they’re to realise their dreams of being European champions but they’ve got every chance with this group of passionate supporters behind them.
After the full-time whistle there was a special moment as the crowd belted out Sweet Caroline, one of the England men’s team’s unofficial anthems, when congratulating the players on their win.
