Reese Witherspoon has shed light on the upcoming Legally Blonde 3, teasing Jennifer Coolidge’s return to the big screen.
It has been a whopping five years since the Elle Woods icon confirmed the sequel was in the works, with Mindy Kaling and Brooklyn Nine Nine creator Dan Goor signing on to write the script.
Since then, details have been thin on the ground about the project, and when we could expect to see our favorite lawyer tackling injustice once again.
In a new interview, Reese couldn’t help but heap praise on her co-star – who played her iconic pal Paulette Bonafonte in the previous two outings – insisting that she will be in the sequel.
‘I’m beyond myself about Jennifer Coolidge,’ she said. ‘She deserves every one of those flowers she is receiving right now. And she’s just one of those people who is so naturally gifted and funny and that you can just tell people love her, because she gets up there and everybody’s like, “I love her”.
‘But she’s just done a lot of good work in our business for so long, that it’s really nice to see her getting this incredible moment.’
After Jennifer said in October that she hadn’t been approached for a third stint as Paulette, Reese vowed that she would be included.
‘There is no Legally Blonde 3 without Jennifer Coolidge,’ she added to Entertainment Tonight.
Mindy previously addressed Jennifer’s involvement in the flick, describing her as the ‘jackpot’ casting.
However, last year, the White Lotus legend was questioned about the third instalment, confessing that she hadn’t heard from anyone in charge.
‘I know nothing, I mean I don’t know if they wanted to surprise me or something, because I hear about it a lot,’ she told the outlet. ‘I heard that Mindy has this amazing version of our next round, but I haven’t seen it. I don’t have the call yet.’
Someone needs to pick up the phone, ASAP.
Mindy also made headlines when she lifted the lid on where the idea to explore Elle Woods’ story once again came from, revealing that Reese was the driving force behind it.
During an appearance on Good Morning America, she explained: ‘I’ve been working with Reese on a couple of movies and we’ve been friends for a while and I have always quoted the movies to her.
‘It’s been over 20 years since she did the first movie and she asked me, “You know, I’d really love to revisit this character.”
‘I was nervous because the movie is so iconic but then I thought it would be really fun to see that character in her 40s. What is Elle Woods dealing with as a 41-year-old woman?
‘I think it’s going to be a great movie for Reese and people are going to love to see her in this part.’
