Hundreds of registered nurses plan to hold a five-day strike over concerns about workplace conditions at Sutter Health’s three Alta Bates Summit Medical Center campuses in Oakland and Berkeley.
The strike, which begins at 7 a.m. Monday, is meant to protest “persistent patient care issues, including workplace violence and high turnover rates,” according to a statement Sunday morning by the California Nurses Association and National Nurses United. Nurses routinely have had to work overtime and double shifts to account for a “mass exodus” of staff members, often due to Sutter acting “disrespectfully” to nurses, the statement said.
The strike is expected to last until 6:59 a.m. Saturday morning, the nurses association said. The three affected campuses are located at 350 Hawthorne Ave. in Oakland, as well as at 2450 Ashby Ave. and 2001 Dwight Way in Berkeley.
The nurses association represents 1,800 nurses at the three campuses.
A call by this news organization to Sutter Health seeking comment was not immediately returned.
