Most households encounter these yellow stains in bathrooms at some point. The thing is, no matter how often bathroom sinks and taps are cleaned, households will eventually run into this issue, as it is usually caused by hard water.
In other words, the high concentration of minerals in the tap water is to blame for these unsightly blotches. This is also known as limescale.
Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, one group member anonymously asked for advice on how to remove stains found around their bathroom taps
Posting images of the taps, they said: “Hi everyone, sorry for these ugly pictures. I’ve been trying to get this yellow stuff around the sink taps off for a while.
“I’ve tried bleach, soaking it in white vinegar and mould cleaning spray to try and remove it. But no luck sadly. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you.”
The post tested over 120 responses with the majority of Mrs Hinch fans suggesting a limescale remover spray be used – more specifically a product known as Viakal.
Trish Gibson said: “Viakal spray and leave a couple of minutes. Use a sponge, then rinse off. Leaves them good as new.”
Sarah Young wrote: “Viakal works a treat! Apply with a toothbrush and leave for five minutes. Once the time is up brush lightly around the taps.”
Christine Hanley commented: “Viakal spray for limescale. Spray it then let it soak in, then with a sponge gently rub around it and the stains will come off.”
Sam Southhall wrote: “Viakal spray, leave for five minutes, and remove with a toothbrush. Use it weekly even if there’s little or nothing visible there.
“It is something that comes back because washing your hands, turning off taps, etc… will leave water ‘sat’ at the base of your taps til you next clean them.
“If you’re in a hard water area, limescale levels will be higher, so the problem will be more frequent. Hope that’s helpful.”
Iris Mahon said: “Looks like limescale and rust oozing from underneath the taps. Viakal will probably help.”
Other Mrs Hinch fans were opposed to using chemicals and suggested using white vinegar instead.
The acetic acid in white vinegar is the secret to this product’s effectiveness in removing yellow stains from bathroom sinks and taps.
This aids in the dissolving of mineral deposits as well as oil stains, making them easier to remove.
To put it to use, fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and saturate every yellow stain with the solution. Allow a few minutes for the product to take effect before rubbing it with a clean cloth and rinsing it away.
