Rescued Bay Area sheep Timmy aims to become national celebrity

With Easter around the corner, a local four-legged celebrity is campaigning to become the newest spokes animal for the holiday — and one of its popular candy confections.

Timmy, a resident of the Funky Chicken Animal Sanctuary in rural Vacaville, has been named one of the 10 finalists in the annual Cadbury Candy Company’s “Who Will Be The Next Cadbury Bunny?” campaign.

This year the company is focusing the contest on rescue animals and Timmy fits the bill to a “T.”

The Rambouillet sheep was rescued by Darcy Smith of the Funky Chicken Rescue Sanctuary in rural Vacaville about two years ago.

Smith said that she was tipped off about the contest by someone visiting the sanctuary’s website and she thought it would be the perfect thing for Timmy.

“Oh, we need to enter that,” Smith commented Monday. “I had a great picture of him with Easter Bunny ears jumping.”

Smith said that from the thousands of entries, Timmy’s photo was chosen to be one of the 20 to be moved into the semifinals.

The 20 contestants were trimmed in half for the finals. For that portion, Smith filmed a humorous video of the sheep in his bunny ears frolicking around the farm delivering Cadbury eggs to all of the other animals.

“Timmy has always dreamt of being the Cadbury Easter Bunny,” Smith’s voiceover proclaims. “He has been training for the position for a long time. He took many lessons from the chickens, ducks, turkeys, and even the emu on how to hide eggs. He worked on his hopping ability and ate carrots at every meal.”

The winning animal will receive $5,000 plus an additional $5,000 that the winner can then donate to their favorite animal rescue center. Smith said that if Timmy wins, all of the funds would be used to continue the work done at the sanctuary.

Timmy is no newcomer to the bright lights of Hollywood. Last year the little wooly fellow was featured on the reality show, “The Wizard of Paws.” The show follows Derrick Campana around the country as he works with animals with mobility issues, designing and building special prosthetics to help overcome those issues.

Thanks to the prosthetic, Timmy no longer has mobility issues and doesn’t even have to wear the brace.

The contest ends on March 14. Visitors are encouraged to vote once a day.
