Reservation Dogs Season 3 Trailer: A Look at the Final Season

0

As viewers prepare to say their goodbyes to the Reservation Dogs crew, FX has dropped a trailer for the series’ third and final season. Created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the critically acclaimed series follows four indigenous teens: Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs), Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor) living in rural Oklahoma. Following the suicide of their close friend, Daniel (Dalton Cramer), the foursome decides to honor his memory with a trip to California. For most of two seasons, the group is seen plotting to raise enough money for the trip to the state that Daniel dreamed of visiting. Last season, Elora, Bear, Willie Jack, and Cheese reached that goal and commemorated Daniel in an emotional scene.

The trailer for season 3, which you can watch below, picks up as the group leaves California. They all board a bus, but only three of the four protagonists (Elora, Cheese, and Willie Jack) end up back home, as Bear seems to have more exploring to do. Once home, Elora begins to plan for her future and Willie Jack leans into her heritage, offering to learn from her elders to keep their traditions going. Without Bear around, his mom Rita (Sarah Podemski) is now communicating with the spirit of Cookie (Janae Collins), her deceased friend and Elora’s mother. On the road, Bear continues to communicate with his spirit guide (hilariously portrayed by Dallas Goldtooth) whose conversation topics range from who invented the potato chip to explaining the path of healing.

Despite critical acclaim, a Peabody Award, two Independent Spirit Awards, and nominations for Critics’ Choice Television Awards and Golden Globes, Reservation Dogs will end with its upcoming season. The announcement, made by co-creator Harjo, shocked fans, given the show’s success. On June 29, Harjo took to Instagram to share the series news, writing: “Aho young and old warriors! Here it is: The coming third season of Reservation Dogs will be the final season [of] Reservation Dogs. That’s a difficult line to write and a more difficult decision to make. However, it’s the correct decision creatively for the show. I always knew what the end of this story would be, I just didn’t know when it would arrive. As we continued to break stories and write scripts this season, it became clear to the producers, Taika and me that the season three finale in the perfect SERIES finale.” Despite the sad news, Harjo also shared some positive news, adding that the beloved Reservation Dogs characters may “show up in other stories to come.”

Reservation Dogs premiered in 2021, and made history as the first American TV series where every writer, director and series regular came from an Indigenous background. Co-creators Harjo and Waititi also serve as executive producers alongside Garrett Basch.

The final season of FX on Hulu’s Reservation Dogs premieres, with two episodes, on August 2. The season will include 10 episodes and will stream on Wednesdays until September 27.
