It’s electric! Pack your bags and buckle up, now’s the time to plan to be part of aviation history.
Scandinavian airline SAS will be selling 30 seats for its first-ever electric-powered flight, on Friday, June 2 at 6 am EST. To commemorate the inaugural flight, the ticket price will be 1946 SEK (roughly $125), paying tribute to the year when SAS first began operating.
The catch: The electric flight isn’t yet scheduled.
The exact date will be communicated, with a goal for takeoff in 2028. Travelers with bookings will be updated email as the specifics take shape. SAS’s inaugural electric flights will be domestic flights in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Should you be booked on the selected travel date five years from now, seat reservations can be transferred free of charge.
“The fact that we can now invite our passengers to the next major milestone in the future of aviation is a natural continuation of that pioneering spirit and a significant step on our journey towards more sustainable aviation,” said Anko van der Werff, President and CEO of SAS.
Sweden’s government’s goal is to achieve net-zero emissions for domestic air transport by 2030. By 2045, the objective is to ensure that all international flights operating from Sweden maintain net-zero emissions.
SAS is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The introduction of electric flights represents a significant milestone in SAS’s journey towards sustainable aviation.
The exact aircraft for the voyage can not yet be confirmed. “The final decision is not made with regards to which electric aircraft will operate the specific first flight,” SAS wrote in a statement. “SAS has multiple initiatives underway towards zero-emission flights, and final selection will be done in time for the first electric flight which is estimated to be carried out in 2028.” The airline promises no compromises will be made in terms of passenger safety.
