Goodman Games is deeply saddened to learn that legendary artist Russ Nicholson has passed away.
An entire generation of American old-school gamers knows Russ’s iconic illustrations from the original Fiend Folio, and a generation of British fantasy fans knows Russ’s iconic illustrations for the Fighting Fantasy game books and other Games Workshop titles. Russ’s work has appeared in countless books over forty years of fantasy publications.
Goodman Games worked with Russ for more than a decade. His inimitable illustrations appear in the DCC RPG core rulebook and many of our DCC adventure modules. He was always a personable professional. His impeccable – and instantly recognizable – pen-and-ink style brought style, verve, and mystery to every book it graced.
In 2019, we had the fortune to conduct a wide-ranging interview with Russ, which was later published in our Yearbook #8. In memory of Russ, we present that interview here. Let’s all remember his contributions to the field of fantasy art.
