Review: Palomino Festival in Pasadena is a blissful time, glitches aside

Thousands of concertgoers turned up early at Goldenvoice’s inaugural Palomino Festival at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Saturday for country music, sunshine and beer.

The gorgeous and not-too-hot weather was perfect for an outdoor fest as folks wandered between the two stages to check out early day acts including Sierra Ferrell, Langhorne Slim, Nikki Lane and Amethyst Kiah.

After singer-songwriter Morgan Wade impressed with her vocals on “Wilder Days” over on the side stage, Texas alt-country artist Paul Cauthen was cuttin’ a rug as he delivered “Champagne & a Limo” at the main Pancho Stage.

Blues and country singer Charley Crockett drew a large crowd on the side stage as he belted out “Welcome to Hard Times” and tried out a brand new song, “I’m Just a Clown,” which went over well.

Between acts, fans took selfies with various staged photo ops, played yard games like cornhole and bowsed through Nikki Lane’s curated Stage Stop Marketplace that was filled with vintage western wares.

Like many other businesses these days, the Palomino Festival was obviously suffering a few shortages, including booze.

There were heated arguments in the parking lot among guests and staff over where certain patrons should park, which were eventually broken up by local law enforcement. That caused a large backup and delays getting into the festival.

The event kicked off at noon and by 4:30 p.m. the VIP bars were out of several advertised beverage options and premium booze offerings. That forced longer waits at general admission bars, which were also rapidly running out of alcohol.

That’s something that never sits well with a country crowd, who were very vocal about their displeasure, though the bar staff were telling guests backups were “on the way.”

The Palomino party continues and wraps up this evening with sets by Orville Peck, Turnpike Troubadours, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Willie Nelson and Kacey Musgraves.
