Bizzarrini, the Italian car company that began life in 1964 and was reborn in 2020, has revealed a new supercar called the Giotto.
Named after company founder Giotto Bizzarrini, the car is to be powered by a mid-mounted, naturally-aspirated V12 engine.
An Italian engineer born in 1926, Giotto was best known for his work on the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. He was later involved with a project that turned a 250GT into the one-off Ferrari Breadvan.
Technical details for the Giotto will be revealed later this year, Bizzarrini says, adding that the V12 engine will draw inspiration from those made by Lamborghini. The transmission will be an eight-speed, dual-clutch unit designed to meet “performance, drivability, emissions compliance and emotional targets,” the company added.
Engineering for the Giotto and its engine will be overseen by Chris Porritt, the chief technical officer at Bizzarrini who has previously worked at Aston Martin, Tesla and Rimac.
Porritt said: “We have a very clear vision for the Giotto, defined ultimately by how it makes a driver feel…We now very deliberately and authentically recreate Giotto’s vision, choosing not to chase acceleration times or lap records, but to develop a car that appeals to those experienced drivers seeking purity, authenticity and rarity.”
The car was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro – whose resume stretches back to 1955 and includes Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati among others – and his son Fabrizio. It is said to be inspired by the Bizzarrini 5300 GT of 1964, but with sharp-edged, carbon-clad bodywork befitting a car due to begin testing in 2024.
The company said: “The prominent dual bonnet-mounted vents of original Bizzarrinis are evolved into a new frontal visual character for the Giotto, incorporating ultra-slim LED headlights.”
Giugiario, who contributed to the design of the ‘64 Bizzarrini 5300 GT when working at Bertone, said: “To have the opportunity to design an entirely new car from Bizzarrini is a privilege. Our two names are united in nearly six decades of history and a series of now iconic designs. With the Giotto, we honour the past but we focus wholly on the future.”
