UTSUNOMIYA — Anyang KGC whipped Taipei Fubon Braves, 94-69, for a rousing start in the East Asia Super League Champions Week at Nikkan Arena here.

Imports Omari Spellman fired 22 points, while Darryl Monroe chipped in 21 points and grabbed just as many rebounds in the rout that kicked off the five-day tournament featuring eight powerhouse clubs from the region.

Rhenz Abando finished with 11 points, four rebounds, two steals and a block—most of which during garbage time—but head coach Kim Sang-shik said he was still pleased with the Asian import’s performance, especially after a previous injury.

“He couldn’t start the season early. But when he came back to the season, he’s been doing a great job on scoring the ball and getting rebounds because of his strength,” he said through a translator. “He’ll get better, too.”

Anyang sped to an 11-0 lead to open the game and then broke the game wide open in the third period, where KGC led by 88-61.

Up next for Anyang is San Miguel Beer in a clash scheduled for Saturday where Kim is also counting Abando to just well.

“San Miguel, we’re looking forward to playing against them. We heard they’re a good team, Rhenz will play better. I think that, too,” he said.

Ihor Zaytsev led the way for the Braves with 20 points and five rebounds. Michael Singletary, who also played for San Miguel in the PBA, added 17 and 12. Darius Smart rounded out the twin digit scorers with 12.

Taipei will try to bounce back against Ryukyu in a clash set also this Saturday.
