Daniel Ricciardo might be on the cusp of losing his seat in Formula 1 but the WA driver can at least rest easy knowing a music career could be on the cards.
The Duncraig-raised McLaren driver is widely believed to be close to being dropped by the team after another average season, which has once again seen him outperformed by his teammate.
And American rock band Matchbox Twenty have, perhaps unintentionally, joined those sticking the boot into Ricciardo during the season break.
Ricciardo is lapping up a holiday in the US with his rumoured girlfriend Heidi Berger and, during the trip, has been filmed driving and rocking out to the band’s hit 3AM.
In the 42-second clip, Ricciardo does his best karaoke version of the song, singing along to the track while hitting the freeway.
The footage has caught the attention of the band, which took to Twitter to offer the 33-year-old an alternative career path.
“If you’re ever looking for a side gig outside of @F1 let us know @danielricciardo!” the band wrote on Twitter.
The awkward timing of the post wasn’t lost on some fans who pointed out he might well find himself “outside of F1” in the near future.
“He does need a job,” wrote one fan.
“He’ll definitely need it next year,” added another.
Ricciardo has long batted away speculation of his future with McLaren, insisting he’s contracted until 2023, but whispers he’s set to be replaced by fellow Australian Oscar Piastri are getting louder.
But losing his seat could still prove lucrative for the West Aussie, who is reportedly set for a US$21 million golden handshake from the team if it ends his contract now.
Ricciardo is 12th in the driver standings with only 19 points this season, while his teammate Lando Norris is seventh with 76 points.
He is expected to address his future in F1 at the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend.
