Richard Gere’s Dating History: Alejandra Silva, Cindy Crawford and More

Silver and suave — onscreen and off! Richard Gere has not only been married three times, but has also made his way around the Hollywood dating scene over the years.

The Pretty Woman star has been married to wife Alejandra Silva since 2018, and together the two have a blended family of six. Gere and Silva welcomed their first child together, Alexander, in February 2019, followed by their second son in April 2020. The Runaway Bride actor is also father to son Homer, born in 2000, with ex-wife Carey Lowell, while Silva shares son Albert, born in 2012, with ex-husband Govind Friedland.

While Gere and Silva tend to keep their family life private — though the Spain native occasionally shares rare photos of their children via social media — the Dr. T & the Women star’s love life has been in the spotlight for decades.

Gere, who has been linked to such high-profile stars as Barbra Streisand, Priscilla Presley and Susan Sarandon over the years, made headlines when he married Cindy Crawford in 1991. The actor had just come off the enormous success of 1990’s Pretty Woman, while Crawford was taking the world by storm as one of the biggest supermodels of the time.

“Look, I learned a lot from Richard. I learned how to be famous,” the Fair Game actress told Porter magazine in 2015 when explaining her decision to not include her ex-husband in her memoir, Becoming. “Again, that’s not a universal lesson. And a lot of the personal things, everything else I learned from that, were for me.”

After the two split in 1995, he went on to marry Lowell in 2002, two years after the birth of their son, Homer. After Lowell filed for divorce from the actor in 2013, Gere went on to date Padma Lakshmi the following year. He met Silva in 2015 — and the rest was history. (Gere and Lowell finalized their divorce one year later.)

“I have found the quiet and happy life that I have always sought,” Gere told Hola! magazine in 2018 about his romance with Silva.

For her part, the philanthropist gushed, “I feel like I’m in a true fairy tale. Without a doubt, I feel like the luckiest woman in the world,” she told Hello! magazine about her marriage to Gere one year later. “He is the most humble, sensitive, affectionate, attentive, funny, generous man that I’ve ever met. What can I say? I’m so in love! How would you feel if each morning you were asked, ‘What would make you happy today?’ Not a day goes by that he doesn’t mention how important I am to him. I feel very lucky.”

Dawn Steel

Steel, who would go on to become a top movie executive before her death in 1997, dated Gere — then a struggling actor — in the early ‘70s upon moving to Los Angeles. She later recalled her relationship with the then-unknown star in a 1993 interview with the Washington Post when asked if her looks got her ahead in the industry. She remembered a moment where the actor “once said” that she was “pretty enough.”

She added at the time: “It didn’t stop him.”

Penelope Milford

Milford dated Gere throughout the ‘70s after meeting during an NYC production of a folk musical. The two split in 1978.

Gere and the model had a one-night stand in the late 1970s, she claimed in her 2013 memoir, Picasso’s Ghosts.

“His gymnastic skills were apparent. He made love his way … He didn’t withhold,” Mallory wrote about Gere’s apparent prowess in the book, per Business Insider. “He was Valentino in the flesh. A sex symbol not to be forgotten. Not to be lumped in with all the others, but to be remembered for his uniqueness. His thoughtfulness. His caring.”

Gere and the fashion designer got together in the 1980s — after von Fürstenberg had already met husband Barry Diller, she wrote in her 2014 memoir, The Woman I Wanted to Be.

Five years later, the style icon joked about their affair on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen while playing a game of “WTF or DVF.”

When the Bravo host inquired about her romance with Gere, fellow guest Julianne Moore thought it was false, saying, “I’m going to go with ‘What the f–k?’” Von Fürstenberg, for her part, couldn’t resist giving a NSFW answer. “Well, it was a f—k,” she replied with a smile.

Gere and Crawford were married from 1991 to 1995, a four-year period that saw the two at the height of their respective careers. The supermodel later called her marriage to Gere a “great chapter” in her life, explaining that their big age gap caused difficulty in their relationship.

“I think a lot of what happened with Richard and I was that I was still 22 and at 22 — as a young woman — I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be and he was already 37,” she said in a 2013 interview. “So in some ways, he knew that I was still growing and changing. I just didn’t want to hear it from him because at 22 you think you know everything. You think you’re already formed. And then you realize, 10 years later, that they were totally right.”

The couple wed in 2018 after two years of dating, later welcoming two sons to create a brood of six altogether: four boys (including the pair’s respective sons from their previous marriages) and Gere and Silva themselves.

“Knowing him gave meaning to my life. It was feeling that someone was reaching out and showing me my true path. It had to be that way in this lifetime,” Silva, who is 30 years younger than her husband, gushed to Hola! magazine in 2018. “[Richard] has promised me at least 20 good years! But I have to confess that he has much more energy than me, is much more active. It’s hard to keep up with him. … He’s not human!”
