Richard Hammond reflects on series away from Grand Tour

Richard Hammond’s Workshop first hit screens last year and was a hit with fans. This week, series two began on Discovery+, and the new episodes will show how the former Top Gear icon coping with the struggles of running a business as well as the fun that comes from fulfilling his passion. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he compared the show to another popular series’ format, explaining why the significance of people and their memories makes the show.

The first series of the show saw Richard, 52, excitedly setting up the new business.

However, a year on, the company is struggling financially and Richard is forced to make some changes, which is documented in the candid series.

Addressing his inspirations for the workshop and speaking candidly about the struggles he has faced, the mechanic and TV presenter talked about what might attract viewers to tune into his new project.

“We’re getting there,” he commented. “I’m loving it. It is an adventure – it does have downs as well as ups.

“But that’s okay. It’s a real experience and I’m learning a lot about myself and about the industry.”

Talking about the hit BBC restoration series The Repair Shop, he added: “There is a little bit of that about it because The Repair Shop is about people.

“Whether it’s an old pair of shoes or a violin. And in my case, whether it’s an old Toyota or a Jaguar E-type.

“People only care enough to keep them going and to restore them because they’re imbued with their own memories and emotions, and that’s important.”

“It’s lovely to do something that my wife Mindy and my daughters, Izzie and Willow.

“It’s part of our family life. I do this work, I start from home and I go to the workshop and I come back home.

“I don’t get on an aeroplane. And it’s great for them to see that.

“Yeah, I’m loving and it’s also in the county where we live. So the people that we see are the people I live amongst, which is great.”

On the reaction to the first series, Richard commented: “People have really enjoyed it they were very kind about it.

“It’s much more the real me because when I’m doing other TV shows, it’s a different experience.

“It’s a different world really. But this is me in my real world, following my own real passion and exposed for all my many weaknesses!”
