It’s nothing new to incorporate current social criticism into the core message of a collection. But there are few designers at Berlin Fashion Week who communicate as skillfully and clearly as Jale Richert and Michele Beil of Richert Beil. The absurdities of classic ideals of beauty, normative stereotypes, and entrenched gender roles inspired the two to stage a show after a long break. In a former supermarket, they sent their exceptionally well-conceived looks across old and dingy tile floors. It was one of the highlights of the day.
The first look was a black suit, mercilessly well cut, with shiny zipper details. Little by little, classics of the men’s wardrobe were deconstructed and placed in a new context that seemed to break down both tradition and gender roles. Shirts, jackets, and dress codes looked nothing like their originals. Ties wrapped around bodies, cutouts revealed skin, and latex mingled with apparent business clothes. The look is not new to many Berliners, but it has rarely looked so polished.
