With 28 runs needed off the final five deliveries, Rinku Singh had smashed five consecutive sixes off Yash Dayal to help KKR chase a 205-run total in a last-ball thriller. The 25-year-old finished on an unbeaten 48 off just 21 balls.
Only four cricketers have scored five sixes in an over of IPL before Rinku. The 29 runs off the last six balls became the highest target achieved in the last over of an innings in IPL. The innings made the Aligarh-born cricketer, who used to help his father by delivering cylinders on his bike, a household name.
Jurel, who played for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2023, revealed that Rinku called him and asked for his feedback. He also revealed how an excited Rinku asked if the Rajasthan Royals squad was talking about his stellar knock.
“He is Lord Rinku (laughs). He is a very nice and humble person. He is also my roommate. When he hit five sixes (against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023), he called me first. He called and asked kaisa laga? bata na kaisa laga?’ (How was it? Tell me how did you feel?’ He then asked – ‘Mere baare mein baat chal rahi thi kya?’ Were people talking about me?),” Jurel told Times of India (TOI) in an interview.
“I said- ‘Whatever you did today, I don’t think anyone will be able to do that again.’ He is such a nice person. Very humble, down to earth and a simple person,” he added.
Jurel, who scored 152 runs in 13 matches at an average of 21.71 and a strike rate of 172.72 in the IPL 2023, also praised Rinku for his never-ending hard work.
“He often says – ‘There is no substitute for hard work’ – and this is the only thing that will drive him forward. We have shared rooms and batting crease since childhood. He is from Aligarh and I am from Agra. Both the places are close to each other. He is a hardworking cricketer,” he said.
Rinku Singh finished the season as the leading run-scorer for KKR. He scored 474 runs in 14 matches at an average of 59.25 and a strike rate of 149.52.
