Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri has been compared to Manchester City star Phil Foden by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

Nwaneri became the youngest player in Premier League history after making his debut for the Gunners in their victory over Brentford on Sunday.

Nwaneri, 15, replaced Arsenal goalscorer Fabio Vieira in injury-time after being included in Mikel Arteta’s squad for the trip to Brentford.

The midfielder, who was born in March 2007, was called up for first-team training for the first time on Saturday.

As Nwaneri make Premier League history, Arsenal fans sang ‘He’s going to school in the morning!’

Arsenal fast-tracked the decision to push Ethan Nwaneri into the first-team due to interest from Manchester United and Liverpool.

United legend Ferdinand has now compared Nwaneri to City and England midfielder Foden.

‘There’s no doubting this kid’s ability,’ Ferdinand told his YouTube channel on Tuesday.

‘I’ve heard from coaches that are at the club and from various different people in the game at that level that there aren’t many 15-year-olds in the last 10 or so years that have got the ability that this guy’s shown on a consistent basis.

‘We are talking the Fodens of this world. At 15, he’s at a similar level they’re talking.’

Foden has become a star player under Pep Guardiola since breaking into the first team at the Etihad, scoring 48 goals across 179 games.

The 22-year-old, who has 16 caps for England, has helped City win four Premier League titles, four League Cups and the FA Cup.

Last year’s top-flight champions City are second in the Premier League following their opening seven games, behind surprise leaders Arsenal.

Both sides face huge fixtures in their next matches, with Arsenal taking on Tottenham in the first North London Derby of the season on October 1 before City host Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils for the Manchester Derby the next day.
