Rise in inflation for industrial workers

Inflation for industrial workers in May stood at 6.97 per cent while it was at 6.33 per cent compared to April.

Food inflation stood at 7.92 per cent against 7.05 per cent of the previous month and 5.26 per cent during the corresponding month a year ago, according to the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Coimbatore recorded a maximum increase followed by Salem and Jalandhar. But Yamunanagar recorded the maximum decrease followed by Delhi.

The Ministry’s department of labour compiles the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers every month on the basis of retail prices collected from 317 markets spread over 88 industrially important centres in the country.

The all-India CPI-IW for May increased by 1.3 points and stood at 129 points, according to its classification.

On a one-month percentage change, it increased by 1.02 per cent with respect to the previous month compared to an increase of 0.42 per cent recorded between corresponding months a year ago.

The maximum upward pressure in the current index came from the food and beverages group.

At item level, tomato, potato, edible oils, milk, fish, chicken, cooking gas, bus fare, allopathic medicine and telephone charges were responsible for the rise in the index.

There was a fall in the prices of onion, lemon, mango and petrol for vehicles.
