Roar, a female-led anthology series starring Nicole Kidman, Issa Rae and Alison Brie, is the hottest new offering from Apple TV+.
Released earlier this month, the eight-part series promises a set of “genre-spanning and thought-provoking stories” which offer “an insightful, poignant, and sometimes hilarious portrait of what it means to be a woman today.” We’re listening.
Based on Cecelia Ahern’s 2018 short story collection of the same title, Roar represents the coming together of an impressive line-up of female talent both on-screen and behind the camera.
GLOW writer duo Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch have written and created the show, while Nicole Kidman serves as executive producer alongside Per Saari as part of their Blossom Films production company.
It’s also expected to be in safe hands from Apple Originals behind it: it seems the streaming service’s original programming arm can do no wrong, with hits like The Morning Show, Ted Lasso and more recently WeCrashed, a limited series starring Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto which tells the real-life story of WeWork founders, couple Adam and Rebekah Neumann.
What have fans said about Roar?
Well, let’s just say the various plots in Roar have caused quite the discussion on Twitter, particularly the “duck episode.” Warning, spoilers ahead.
One fan tweeted, “Apple TV: so here is a show about WOMEN and how they are abused and murdered, and seen as objects, even dressed in bunny outf– Twitter: *busts through the wall* DID YOU SAY HUGH DANCY IN A BUNNY OUTFIT GETTING RAILED BY MADS MIKKELSEN?????”
Another added, “Did anyone else watch Roar on Apple TV? Because wtf?! Lmaooo,” while one person commented, “So i’m watching Roar on Apple TV… and I’m on the duck episode & like… what the f[*]ck?”
