There are many cards available to give to loved ones on Valentine’s Day, but thanks to a fan contest run by Freddy Krueger actor and horror icon Robert Englund, the Springwood slasher is getting all romantic in time for this year’s Valentine celebrations. Posting on his official Twitter account, Englund revealed the winning design in his 2022 contest, which was by Louise Spragg and will not be part of a limited edition release just in time for all the lovers out there. For fans of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series, there may well be something a little familiar about the design, as it takes its inspiration from a scene in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.

Robert Englund has been the fan favorite Freddy actor for almost four decades now since the character made his debut in Wes Craven’s 1984 horror A Nightmare on Elm Street. While the film would give a first big screen outing for Johnny Depp, and turn Heather Langenkamp into one of the original “final girl” icons, it was Englund’s burned villain that made the biggest mark in the movie, becoming a pop culture icon that was so synonymous with the actor that finding someone else to play the role is pretty much unthinkable. For that reason, despite an attempt to remake the original movie in 2010 which did not have his involvement, Englund has not strayed too far away from his Freddy connection, as his new contest proves.

The winning entry in Englund’s contest contains the enticing invitation of “Hey Valentine…Wanna Suck Face?” and sees Freddy literally sucking the life out of asthmatic teen Sheila, in a direct homage to the same scene and one-liner from the fourth installment of the franchise. In the movie, Freddy’s kiss of death in a dream leads to the character having an asthma attack in the real world, and while that isn’t perhaps the sentiment many would want to share with those they would hope to get romantic with this February 14th, for fans of Freddy this will be a kind of card you don’t find in the local mall.

Robert Englund Will Never Get Away From Freddy Krueger And Seemingly Doesn’t Want To

While other iconic characters such as Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees have frequently changed actors, Robert Englund has been the face of Freddy Krueger through eight movies, a TV series and numerous one-off appearances. Having declared himself too old to play Krueger anymore, Englund did don the striped sweatshirt and razor glove again for The Goldbergs’ Halloween Special in 2018, giving fans hope once again that the star could return as Freddy again at some point in the future.

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been in the doldrums since the 2010 reboot, which starred Jackie Earle Haley in the role of Krueger and didn’t exactly land with either critics or audiences, and while the likes of Jason Blum has expressed a great desire to have a shot at reviving the franchise, but a combination of rights issues and legalities has so far prevented this from happening. Whether we will see an acceptable return of Freddy Krueger in the future is currently not on the cards, Englund himself will be appearing in Season 4 of Stranger Things on Netflix later this year, and as for Freddy, fans can at least still celebrate their love of the knife-handed dream demon with the loved one in their life.
