Though the Recording Academy has shown him plenty of love, Roddy Ricch isn’t afraid to call out the Grammys over what he perceives as snubs.
The Live Life Fast rapper addressed his criticism in the latest episode of Kevin Durant’s The ETCs Podcast with Eddie Gonzalez, when asked whether the current hip-hop landscape was more competitive or collaborative. The Compton native said it was more so the latter, and recalled the time he confronted the Grammys for failing to properly recognize Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Baby’s music.
“I feel like it’s more, for sure, more a collaboration because we run into each other more,” Roddy said at the 5:55 mark in the video above. “But I feel like everybody got their own lane, everybody got their own thing they do. You know what I’m saying? Uzi is like, like when I was talking to the Grammys, I’m like, ‘Y’all ain’t nominate Uzi for [Best] Rap Album?’ I was tripping on them. Even like Lil Baby: ‘Y’all ain’t nominate Lil Baby?’ Like I’m tripping, ‘cause it’s like everybody got their own lane, and it should be spoken about, talked about more, because I feel like the n***as now that’s doing shit like, no disrespect, but we really breaking barriers.”
Roddy didn’t specify which records were snubbed, though it’s safe to assume he’s referring to Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake and Baby’s My Turn, both of which were released in 2020. That same year, Roddy earned his first and only Grammy win in 2019 for his appearance on Nipsey Hussle’s “Racks in the Middle,” which took home the trophy for Best Rap Performance.
