Roman Carbajocenter from Bilbao who carved out a place for himself in the ACB League in the now-defunct Box Bilbao and that became international, has passed away at the age of 55, as reported to Efe by sources close to the family. Carbajo and his 2.04 became essential in the Biscayan team in the second decade of the eighties and the first half of the nineties. He “American from San Francisco”a popular neighborhood in Bilbao, came out of the quarry of the Patronageat the Maristas school in the Biscayan capital, and also played for Breogán de Lugo, Baskonia, Ourense and Andorra before retiring at the age of 31.
Carbajo was international in lower categories and was one of the most promising interior players at the beginning of the eighties. A great rebounder and a great defender, he became a determining factor in Caja Bilbao, which reached the elite and played its matches at La Casilla. His role in that team was decisive along with Americans of the stature of Joe Kopicki and Darrell Lockart. He was part of a nucleus of national players among which were Lafuente bedbugJJ davalillo or Jose Manuel Bigheaded that turned the Basques into one of the sensations of the League. Injuries caused his career to end as soon as he was over thirty. In the following teams he served as a rotation player and it was common for him to become the first relief of the traditional interior pair of American players. He played almost 300 games in the ACB (287) with 7.5 points per game, 3.3 rebounds and 22 minutes on the court.
