Ronnie O’sullivan Has ‘Fastest Century Ever’ Record Taken Away After Commentator Balls Up – Snooker Freaks

Ronnie O’Sullivan saw a snooker record taken away from him just 30 minutes after a bungling commentator had announced his achievement.

The Rocket rattled in a magnificent quickfire century in frame two of a 4-0 whitewash win over China’s Bai Langning at the Scottish Open. Bungling Eurosport commentator Neal Foulds called the century live at three minutes and 24 seconds after O’Sullivan sank the final yellow to take the break to 100 and counting.

However within 30 minutes the truth emerged that the initial call was incorrect and the break was timed at three minutes and 34 seconds – three seconds outside the previous best.

That was only after the Rocket was congratulated in the TV studio after the match by presenter Rachel Casey and close friend Jimmy White on having set the new record for quickest televised century.

Maltese speedster Tony Drago still holds the record for the fastest ton compiled in three minutes and 31 seconds.

The sport’s governing body World Snooker Tour were also left embarrassed after tweeting out the false ‘record’ to its 200,000 followers as social media lit up with the news.

O’Sullivan, aged 46, has previously said he feels like an imposter winning snooker tournaments and said playing was now ‘insignificant’. It seems that the Rocket’s latest record attempt was a result of the star trying to wrap up the Scottish Open match quickly.

Afterwards he said: “I felt like I needed to speed up a bit and just enjoy myself out there, so I just tried to get it done as quickly as I could – win or lose. In and out, quickly as you can. I wasn’t timing it myself, but it seemed quick.

“I didn’t really know about the record. But I played Tony a few times and he was a great player – a fantastic talent. You’ve got to go for a few shots, haven’t you? If they go in, then great. I have never really been bothered about records.”

O’Sullivan, 46, already holds the record for the fastest maximum 147 break ever made – potting the 15 reds, 15 blacks and all the colours in five minutes and eight seconds.

He has made a record 15 maximums, and back in May equalled Stephen Hendry’s record of seven world title successes at the Crucible. The Rocket has also won a record 21 majors of the snooker’s Triple Crown tournaments, and set another best mark of 39 ranking title victories.

The star has previously spoken about his running hobby while not playing snooker and is enjoying his time at the Scottish Open. He added: “I have a nice gym in the hotel and got a few runs sorted out around Edinburgh this week, so it’s all good.”
