Ross Kemp ‘pulled out of’ Titanic submarine trip after checks deemed it ‘unsafe’

Former EastEnders star Ross Kemp almost made a documentary where he dived down to the RMS Titanic in an OceanGate submersible, it has been revealed.

Ross’ agent, Professor Jonathan Shalit, shared: “Their team checked out this OceanGate submersible and pulled out of using it, as it was simply not considered safe or fit for purpose.

“They found other sub dives which have been safe and successful, but by that point, Ross was so busy with all his TV shows that he was unable to commit the time.”

“I am just relieved not to have had my post note in history as the agent who killed Ross Kemp,” he told The Sun.

On Thursday, it was confirmed five men aboard Titan died instantly when it imploded on its quest to the wreckage of the Titanic in OceanGate’s Titan submersible.

Billionaire Hamish Harding, 55, Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son Suleman, 19, died along with OceanGate boss Stockton Rush, 61, and ex-French navy diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77.

Ross reportedly wanted to create a programme in 2022 to mark the 110th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

He’s previously starred in Shipwreck Treasure Hunter and Deep Sea Treasure Hunter without submersibles.

During filming for the Sky History shows Ross blacked out after inhaling too march carbon dioxide.

In one episode, Ross dived the wreckage of one of the world’s most famed shipwrecks, the Mary Rose, which sank in 1545 at the Battle of the Solent.

In one scene he started experiencing hypercapnia which is an increase in blood carbon dioxide levels.

He told Express.co.uk: “Hypercapnia can pass quickly as soon as you clear it out of your mask and you get rid of the CO2.”

Ross added: “It could have gone a lot worse than it actually went, it’s a testament to the training we have had that we managed to get through it.

“When I got out and took my mask off I was suddenly aware just how much CO2 I breathed in.

“Because the oxygen going into your lungs, you can feel it, your lungs feel like a Christmas tree.

“And when we got back to the hotel I was knackered and I had a headache, but I didn’t want to fall asleep in case I didn’t wake up again.”
