Roy Jones Jr has confirmed he has had no role to play in training Chris Eubank Jr for his fight against Conor Benn, welcoming the decision to have both fathers in their son’s corners on the night.

Four-weight world champion Jones Jr began working with Eubank Jr in 2021 with the partnership showing plenty of promise after three fights together.

But the 32-year-old wants his father to return to his team when he takes on Benn on 8 October at the O2 Arena, with Nigel Benn set to be in the opposing corner on the night.

Eubank Snr and Benn shared two wars in 1990 and 1993 with their sons now following in their footsteps. And while the former has major concerns over the fight taking place at a catchweight of 157lbs, Jones Jr says he was happy to step aside.

‘If it was me and he asked me what he should do, I would’ve told him to do just that … Your fathers are the reason the fight is happening, and having the fathers there in the corners is going to make it even bigger for everybody,’ Jones Jr told Fight Hype.

‘So if I was a fan, I’d definitely want to see Nigel in Conor’s corner and see Eubank Sr in Chris’ corner.

‘Why would I want to put my own values over something that’s bigger than that? The fathers are the reason that the fight is relevant, so I’m going to step back because they are the reason the fight is happening.

‘If it wasn’t for their fathers this fight wouldn’t even be talked about right now, because one’s a welterweight and one’s a middleweight.’

In an interview recorded after the initial press conference for the fight in mid-August, Eubank Jr revealed he had no trainer at that moment in time, hoping Eubank Snr would return to prepare him for the fight.

The 56-year-old however has grave concerns over his son fighting at the agreed catchweight however, fearing he could lose another son following the tragic death of Sebastian Eubank last year.

Eubank Jr still hopes his father will have a role to play in his training camp in the coming weeks with Jones Jr believing his presence will be ‘more beneficial’ than his.

‘I love the kid to death and I do all I can for him,’ Jones Jr continued. ‘But this fight, it is much more beneficial if his dad is in the corner because the friction between the two fathers give more heat.

‘I want to do what is best for the team, not myself. And for the team it is [Eubank Snr] in the corner and Conor’s father in the corner because that is what started it all.’
