Royal AM and Cape Town City off the hook with CAF

Royal AM and Cape Town City can continue to prepare for their CAF inter-club commitments next season after being let off the hook by CAF.

This follows confirmation that teams participating in next season’s CAF inter-club competitions are NOT be obliged to have women’s teams.

At the start of last season, CAF had made it clear that teams across the African continent should have women’s teams as part of the requirements to get into inter-club competitions.

However, CAF Director of Competitions Samson Adam has told SABC Sport that the African football body hasn’t fully implemented this policy.

The requirement for African clubs to have women’s teams was part of CAF’s attempt to grow women’s football after successfully launching the CAF Women’s Champions League last season.

To date, only Royal AM and Cape Town City, at least among the four teams that will represent South Africa, do not have women’s teams.

Mamelodi Sundowns have long had a women’s team while Marumo Gallants only recently added a women’s team to their ranks.

CAF CONFIRMS ROYAL AM AND CAPE TOWN CITY ARE OFF THE HOOK

“So far, we will not effect it at 100% yet but we’re working just to make sure that we give the clubs as much incentive as possible. So, it’s not so much punishment or restriction as most people will think when you hear the regulations,” said Adamu.

“This part of it is really just to work with clubs to encourage them so that we can work together, and it’s been progressive, it has been very good.”
