With plenty of players out injured, the Indian team is not set yet and the final few months prior to the World Cup will determine the fate of many probables.
India are currently playing West Indies and then will be up against Australia in bilateral series ahead of the World Cup. They will also take part in the Asia Cup which will start in August.
There are question marks on the chances of a few players, who are currently at the periphery but can be central figures ahead of the selection. Amid this, former India bowler RP Singh has predicted two Indian players who may get selected for the World Cup squad.
RP Singh has backed Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer to be included in the Indian team for the World Cup later this year. Suryakumar Yadav has so far been a miss in the ODIs, while Shreyas Iyer has been out of action with a back injury.
“Suryakumar Yadav is a good option for No 4, along with Shreyas (Iyer), provided he is fit. But if you are looking at him even as a backup option, it is important to give him game-time and he is certainly a good pick,” RP Singh said during a JioCinema discussion.
SKY has so far scored just 452 runs in 24 ODI matches, with a disappointing average of 23. The Indian batter is currently in the squad for the West Indies ODIs, but could manage only 19 runs in the first match. But RP Singh reckons the 32-year-old can be a decent backup for India at no. 4 or no. 5 in ODIs.
“Suryakumar is yet to make his mark in one-day cricket but the way he is batting, and the kind of batter that he is, he can be a good option for No 4 or 5,” he added.
And RP Singh also believes the player is just one big knock away from returning to form.
“He is an experienced player, it is about that one click – how many games he takes to make one big score. Once that happens, he will not face any such issues. Anyway, how many options does the team even have for No 4?,” RP Singh concluded.
