With 41 required off the last 12 balls, Glenn Phillips first smashed three back-to-back sixes on the first three balls of the 19th over. He was dismissed in the 19th over but helped SRH in bringing down the equation to 17 off 6.

Drama unfurled in the final over after Abdul Samad and Marco Jansen collected 12 runs from the first five deliveries. Samad, who scored 11 of these runs, was on strike on the final delivery as SRH needed five of six.

He holed a catch to Jos Buttler standing at long-off but the Sandeep Sharma delivery was declared a no-ball. Now with a boundary needed to seal the deal for the visitors, Samad smoked the final delivery flying over Sandeep’s head for a six.

All kinds of human emotions and reactions were on display on the field after the baffling finish to the match. SRH who were out of the game until the 18th over, ended up registering the highest successful chase by any team against Rajasthan Royals.

Earlier, RR posted 214 runs for the loss of just two wickets after opting to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 35 off 18, while his opening partner collected 95 runs off just 59 deliveries. Captain Sanju Samson stayed unbeaten on 66 off 38 (four fours and five sixes).

RR vs SRH Who Said What

Glenn Phillips (Player of the Match): It was a situation where it was going to go one of two ways. Happy to get out on top of this one. We are all here to do our job, this is what the team needed today. Fantastic for it to pay off, and I had so much fun today out there. (On his dismissal) That was the ball I should have hit the most, I was disappointed the actual slot ball didn’t go over the fence. I felt I left a lot out there with 17 needed off the final over, but then Samad did what he did and obviously we got that little bit of luck with the no ball.

Aiden Markram (SRH captain): Emotions turned quite quickly, nice for us to get over the line. Chasing 215 isn’t easy, and guys contributed all along to chase a big target. We knew in a quick outfield like this we’ll score more than expected, but we had to be aggressive. Abhishek started up off, and then Tripathi gave him company. Then those cameos from Phillips and Klaasy. (On Samad’s finishing skills) I think you got to train it, and put yourself under pressure. You are playing high risk cricket, so that’s where technique comes in.

Sanju Samson (RR captain): This is what IPL gives you, matches like these makes the IPL special. You can never, never, never feel like you have won the game. I knew any opponent can win it and they were batting well too, but I was confident with Sandeep (defending the final over).

He has won us a game from a similar situation (against CSK). He did it again today but that no-ball ruined our result. We played really well with the bat to put up that kind of a score on this wicket, but I think they (SRH) batted really sensibly, credit has to go to them for the way they batted.

(About how he felt after the last ball was called a no-ball) Nothing much, it’s a no ball, just have to bowl it again as simple as that, you don’t think about it too much. Sandeep knows what to do. Maybe there might be a small change in mindset for a few seconds when you feel that the job is done, everyone was celebrating but I think that’s the nature of this game, you can’t step the line at that point of time.

(Asked if they were happy with the total they got as the batting clicked as a unit) But with the target we posted, you can only feel happy once you win the game right, so not at all happy at the moment. (Asked if they should have scored more) That’s a great question… I don’t know.

(Thoughts moving forward in the tournament) To be honest life is never easy playing this format, especially this tournament. Each and every game we have to play our best standard of cricket. We will come back and try to do it again.

Abdul Samad (SRH batter): When I went in to bat, it wasn’t an easy situation. Phillips gave us the injection. Was waiting for the ball to hit in the slot. Luckily got no ball as well. Umpire told us only one run would be given. Was waiting for the ball in the right area to hit. Phillips is the game-changer for us. We are still in the game (tournament). Look forward to carry this momentum in the remaining matches as well.
