Back in early 2020, Sarah Palin appeared in a teddy bear fursuit on The Masked Singer, the surreal sight seemingly a bad omen, heralding stranger things on the horizon.
Now, Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York and Donald Trump’s cartoonishly crooked attorney, has been unmasked on the show in an unaired episode, the first of season 7, according to Deadline.
Two of the show’s judges, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke, actually walked off the stage after Giuliani removed his headpiece, seemingly in protest of the former mayor’s bumbling, yet persistent attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election; the other two judges, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger, remained on stage to banter with Giuliani.
Giuliani’s bizarre appearance on the reality show highlights his contradictory reputation, as the former mayor is perceived as both a threat to American democracy, and, well, a bit of a joke.
At the beginning of his attempt to overturn the election to Trump’s favor, Giuliani famously held a press conference outside “Four Seasons,” a random Philadelphia landscaping company that happened to share the name of the Four Seasons hotel; subsequent series of gaffes turned him into a national laughing stock, including an appearance on Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which showed Giuliani awkwardly flirting with the actor playing Borat’s daughter, Maria Bakalova, who was posing as a MAGA-friendly TV journalist.
Giuliani’s appearance on The Masked Singer seems to echo Sarah Palin’s, another political publicity stunt, albeit one that has already proved to be more controversial. While Palin is widely viewed as the eccentric precursor to Donald Trump’s distinctive brand of reactionary populism, Giuliani’s role in attempting to subvert democracy makes him a far more divisive figure than Palin.
On Twitter, fans of the show expressed their disappointment.
Giuliani is currently the subject of a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems, due to his repeated, baseless claims that the 2020 race was rigged, somehow.
Clearly, Giuliani’s legal troubles have not dampened his desire for fame – but for his own sake, the man should probably stay out of the spotlight.
