On Friday, Russian media provided an update on a potential prisoner swap involving WNBA star Brittney Griner.
It’s being reported that Sergei Ryabkov, the Russian deputy minister for foreign affairs, is optimistic about a prisoner swap.
Russia is apparently targeting an exchange that involves Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout.
“The Americans are showing some external activity, we are working professionally through a special channel designed for this,” Ryabkov said. “Viktor Bout is among those who are being discussed, and we certainly count on a positive result.“
Last week, President Joe Biden said he wants Russian President Vladimir Putin to be “more willing” to discuss a prisoner exchange. Judging by the latest report, Russia’s demands remain firm.
Griner has reportedly been transferred to Female Penal Colony IK-2 in Yavas. This Russian penal colony has a bad reputation.
A prisoner swap is Griner’s only real path back to the United States. In August, she was sentenced to nine years in prison.
