Russian military bloggers rage at Putin’s ‘inability’ to stop attacks

Russian military blowers are raging at Vladimir Putin’s “inability” to stop major airbase attacks. Two strategic airbases are reported to have been hit by Ukrainian forces on Monday.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said while these incidents are likely to have inflicted only “light damage”, they also demonstrated “Ukraine’s ability to strike Russian rear areas and possibly disrupt Russia’s campaign of strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure”.

Strikes also appear to have touched a nerve among Russian military bloggers.

This could, in turn, help to undermine a least a small level of confidence in Moscow’s leadership.

The ISW said: “Anger over the Russian military’s inability to prevent the Ukrainian strikes on Russian strategic airbases over 280 miles from Ukrainian positions outweighed praise for the latest round of strikes against Ukraine within the Russian milblogger community.

“Russian milbloggers criticised Russian officials for failing to anticipate and prevent the drone strikes at the Engels-2 and Dyagilevo Air Bases on December 5.

“Select milbloggers noted that Russian military officials have not adequately protected the airbases, with some suggesting that Russian officials did not adequately defend the bases despite knowing that they were clear targets for Ukrainian strikes.”

The institute also noted that these critical commentators were “prominent” in the blogging community.

One writer fumed on social media site Telegram that “the sheep in the rear continue to demonstrate their absolute unsuitability”.

Following the attacks, Russia launched around 70 missiles at Ukrainian targets.

Volodymyr Zelensky said “most” of these were destroyed before reaching their destinations.

In a television address, he said: “70 Russian missiles were launched, most of them were shot down.

“Every downed Russian missile is concrete proof that terror can be defeated.”
