Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds is planning a huge £795million bid to purchase a new sports team after partnering with a Canadian real estate development company, according to reports. The 46-year-old has owned Wrexham since taking over the Welsh club alongside fellow Hollywood star Rob McElhenney in 2020 and is now said to be interested in expanding his portfolio by investing in a professional hockey franchise in his home country.
Reynolds has teamed up with the Ontario-based Remington Group in an attempt to purchase the Ottawa Senators of the NHL for a fee of almost £800m, according to the Ottawa Sun. It is claimed that final offers for the franchise are due to be submitted by mid-May and the Remington Group, who have plans to build a new arena in the city if their bid is successful, have drafted in Reynolds after deciding to add a recognisable face to lead the charge.
It is also said that the Remington Group could order a docu-series on the Senators following the completion of any successful takeover in order to capitalise on the success of Welcome to Wrexham, which has transformed the global profile of the newly-crowned National League champions thanks to the involvement of Reynolds in recent years.
Reynolds and his business partners would also be writing their names into the record books by purchasing the Senators for a fee of £795m, which would set a new benchmark for the most expensive sale of an NHL franchise in the history of the league. Such a figure would surpass the existing record set in 2021 when the Pittsburgh Penguins were bought by Fenway Sports Group, the holding company that also owns Liverpool.

The news of Reynolds’ interest in taking over the Senators alongside the Remington Group comes less than a month after Wrexham’s promotion to League Two was confirmed following their home victory over Boreham Wood, which was attended by the Deadpool star and co-owner McElhenney in person as they watched the Red Dragons seal a long-awaited return to the EFL after a 15-year absence.
Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster went on to reveal that Reynolds and McElhenney invited the first-team squad back to their box at the Racecourse Ground after the full-time whistle, telling Fozcast: “We went over to Rob and Ryan’s box, and that was it. ‘Crack on’ basically.
“We stayed in there until about midnight, pure vibes honestly. It was so good. Music playing, but we didn’t have a speaker system. A few of the lads brought the changing room bass player and connected it to Spotify. So at any moment they were playing some of the dressing-room songs or even some of the players’ songs. Everybody was just singing and it was so good.
“And then at midnight we went for a little walk around Wrexham, went to a few bars and pubs, but it was carnage. There was players everywhere, fans everywhere, but nobody cared.”
