Saks Fifth Avenue’s Vault Now Has An Intimate Omakase Counter

Shopping and sushi are a natural pair, and now one of the world’s most famous department stores is combining the two.

Saks Fifth Avenue’s flagship store on New York’s Fifth Avenue just opened its own omakase restaurant on the subterranean fine jewelry floor. Hoseki, which means jewel in Japanese, sits near the cases glistening with gems and jewels, away from the hustle of the upstairs store.

The 6-seat oasis for hungry shoppers is the brainchild of Maxwell Weiss, who with his chef and business partner Daniel Kim started Ten Homakase, an in-home omakase service, that hosts pop-ups throughout the city, Long Island and beyond.

With almost two decades of experience, Chef Daniel Kim has worked at Manhattan sushi counters including Sushi Zo and as head chef at Sushi by Bou. He’s also worked as the private sushi chef for Nomura, a Japanese investment bank.

The Vault at Saks New York makes for an intimate and luxurious setting to showcase chef Kim’s culinary art. The 12-course omakase is priced at $95. Typical dishes on the tasting menu will include pieces of sushi such as Hokkaido uni, ocean trout, seared and marinated albacore, plus a caviar course. To drink, a selection of Japanese teas. Each tasting lasts 60 minutes, so diners can take an efficient but relaxing break from shopping and midtown chaos while enjoying sushi made in front of them.

Hoseki is open for lunch Wednesday-Saturday from 12-4pm. Reservations for the hour-long omakase can be made on Resy.

Still hungry? Saks Fifth Avenue is also home to upscale Parisian restaurant L’Avenue at Saks. Spanning two top level floors of the New York flagship, the all-day restaurant designed by Philippe Starck, offers a luxe menu of small and larger plates including sea bass tartare, seared tuna Niçoise salad and creamy morel rigatoni. A sweets menu includes treats from Pierre Hermé, world-renowned French pâtisser. Customers can also simply stop by the pâtisserie for a sweet treat (and maybe a cocktail) without making a reservation.
