Klopp questions why Carabao Cup semi-final is two-legged

After the dramatic win over Leicester City in the League Cup quarter-final on Wednesday, Liverpool were on a major high.

Although manager Jurgen Klopp has made his dissatisfaction at the festive schedule well known, his players would have been confident of overcoming an out-of-sorts Leeds United side on Boxing Day. But that match has been postponed.

Liverpool will hope to use that unexpected time off wisely, especially with a busy January on the horizon and key players heading off to Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Here are your latest Liverpool headlines, as the focus shifts to another clashes with the Foxes at the King Power Stadium on December 28.

Salah alternative identified

With the Africa Cup of Nations poised to go ahead, Liverpool are going to be without some key players in the form of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita to begin the new year.

That will be a blow to manager Jurgen Klopp, especially given Salah is playing as well as any footballer on the planet at the moment.

However, the cup competitions have shown there is depth elsewhere in the squad and Takumi Minamino in particular has caugh the eye when given an opportunity, meaning the Japan international will be confident of making a Premier League impact when called upon.

Ronaldo near miss

Former Liverpool assistant manager Phil Thompson has revealed the Reds believed they had a deal tied up to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to the club in 2003.

The winger had excelled for Sporting CP after breaking into the first team and had quickly established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in European football.

While United did eventually get the deal over the line, Thompson has reflected on just how close Ronaldo came to rocking up at Anfield instead of Old Trafford.

“On the Tuesday morning, we were having lunch at the training ground and it came up on the yellow strap on Sky Sports, ‘ Manchester United have signed Cristiano Ronaldo for £12.2million,” he said.

“Gerard [Houllier] and myself almost choked on our food. I can remember Gerard jumping up and saying, ‘What the hell has gone on there?'”

Klopp labelled ‘numpty’

Former Manchester United and Ipswich Town player Alan Brazil has called Klopp a “numpty” over his opposition to the busy festive schedule.

The German has frequently voiced his opposition to the amount of matches played during this portion of the campaign. Before the Boxing Day cancellation of Liverpool’s clash with Leeds United, the Reds were set to play two matches within 48 hours.

However, not everyone is in agreement with Klopp, including TalkSport presenter Brazil.

“The word you are missing Jurgen is ‘tradition’,” he said. “Stop changing it you numpty! With the benefits of the squad he’s got and the size he’s got… for God’s sake.”
